The Freelander is a 4x4 designed and built by Land Rover. They released the model in October 1997 and it quickly became the best 4x4 released in Europe until 2002. Land Rover created the Freelander to be an SUV model that could be purchased as 2-wheel-drive or 4-wheel drive. The first generation of the Freelander was sold between 1997 to 2006 and could either be bought as a 3-door or 5-door vehicle as a hard or soft top convertible.
Land Rover decided to upgrade the Freelander in 2004 by changing the front of the car and improving the interior.
The Freelander is a very popular sport utility vehicle, but as a 4x4 off roader, it has been rated lower for performance in comparison with other Land Rover models like the Discovery. This is because it doesn’t have a differential lock and has a low-range gear selection. In contrast with other 4x4 models released in the same time frame, the Freelander performed excellent off road.
Land Rover released the Freelander 2 in 2007. They decided to call this model the LR2 when they sold it in the North American market.
Listed in the table below are the different engines types that Land Rover decided to use when creating the Freelander.
